I have made so many of these that I literally cannot remember all of them, so to say they are a quick and easy gift is an understatement. Everyone needs a good throw blanket, especially when it can be cute and personal. If you find a good sale you can even make an adult sized one for under 13 bucks!
First: Choose 2 patterns/colors of Fleece that you like at your favorite place to get fabric.
Second: Have them cut you as much as you would like. I generally make kid ones 1 yard of fabric to 11/2 yrds. and adult ones 2 yards.
Third: take home and clear off a ton of floor space, lie out both cut pieces of fabric, backside to backside (so that the sides you want to be facing out are 1 facing the floor and 2 facing you.) Now any cutting that you do will be through both pieces of fabric (treat them as if they were already connected)
Forth: Trim around the edges so that all 4 sides are equal around the blanket. I trim off the finished sides of the bolt of fabric just because I don't like seeing them but you do not have to do this.
Fifth: Cut a square out of each corner of your fabric I usually do mine about 3"x3" I don't measure I just cut what looks good to me.
Sixth: Cut your "fringe" all the way around the blanket, again I don't measure here, just guesstimate about 2 inches between each cut and cut it the same length in as you did your square. Thicker cuts = thicker fringe, thinner cuts = more fringe & more knot tying.
Seventh: "tie" together your fringe on the top and bottom, to do this pretend like you are tying your shoe, make the first tie twice (a square knot) 2 sides of your fabric will be extra stretchy due to the way that it is made, do not attempt to pull these knots super tight or it will stretch out your fabric. I find the easiest way to do this step is to pick up your blanket holding together the first set of fringe that you want to start at (usually a corner) plant yourself in front of the TV and mindlessly tie your way around the blanket.
Eighth: Once you have tied all your knots you will notice that your blanket looks like a wadded up bundle of fabric. Take the corners of the blanket in each hand and pull (hard). You will hear ripping and cracking of fabric, its OK you are not hurting it and it will flatten out your creation into blanket status. (Repeat for all 4 sides of the blanket)
Ninth: Gift said blanket of warmth to Stepfather (or other deserving candidate)
Tenth: Allow Grandma to use blanket and magical Grandma Powers to lull child to sleep.
